Objective: Designing and Building a New Data Center in 14 Months

Cymer Inc. is the world’s leading supplier of excimer light sources, the deep ultraviolet (DUV) photolithography sources that are used to image semiconductor circuits. As a leading supplier of DUV equipment to the semiconductor industry, Cymer must respond quickly to rapid changes in a volatile market. The company’s data center is central to its success. With the company’s data storage capacities 75 percent utilized and additional growth forecasted, Cymer executives decided to expand the data center.

Challenge: Creating a New Data Center from the Ground Up

Cymer secured a 4,000 square foot site to accommodate the new data center. Located a quarter of a mile from the existing location, the new data center had to be built from the ground up to house more than 100 servers and facilitate the company’s worldwide communications. Cymer executives set a deadline of 14 months for the completion of the project.

Given the size of the move and the complexity of the task, the company knew from the outset that it could not use its own IT staff to design and oversee the construction of the data center. Cymer required Network Insight’s specialized skills in infrastructure design, cabling, and construction to develop and implement such a large-scale project. In addition, Network Insight was one of the few companies Cymer felt had the experience to create knowledgebased bids, select vendors and oversee the process. Most importantly, the company could not afford to divert its internal IT resources from its core business objectives.

Cymer executives immediately began a search for a local company capable of designing one of the largest data centers in San Diego. The search quickly centered on Network Insight in large part because the company came highly recommended from another firm.In addition, Network Insight was the only local company that had ample experience building large-scale data centers. “We were very impressed with Network Insight’s previous its references and its demonstrated capabilities,” said Keith Kubinak, Cymer’s network services manager. “It was a team we felt comfortable with.”

Network insight took the lead on the project, designing the center, selecting vendors, managing the process. Once the data center was built and cabled, Network Insight orchestrated the transfer of 100 servers to the new site over the course of four weekends. Network Insight team members were very proactive and persistent,” observed liked that aspect because I’m so busy. If it wasn’t for Network Insight’s superior project management abilities, the project would not have gone so smoothly or quickly.”

Result: Up and Running On Time and Under Budget

The new Cymer data center was completed within the 14-month timeframe set by executives. By writing exacting bids and minimizing work order changes once the work began, Network insight was able to complete the project under budget.

In addition to realizing its core objectives, Cymer gained some unexpected benefits along the way. Thanks to the security measures recommended by Network Insight, Cymer was able to pass the Sarbanes-Oxley security monitoring audit.

As a result of the outstanding job Network Insight did on the data center, Cymer is considering using the network infrastructure team to design another WAN project. Cymer is also looking at the feasibility of utilizing Network Insight’s network monitoring service. “Network Insight is specifically designed for any organization that has high-availability data needs, but they could be utilized by any company that has a data center,” concluded Kubinak. “Network Insight far exceeded our expectations.”
